Roughness is the surface undulation of a rock joint/mass and is an essential component in evaluating the shear strength of rock joints. It's typically measured in the form of JRC (Joint roughness coefficient) which was introduced by Barton (1973) which is a coefficient used to estimate the joint roughness and shear strength estimation.
