    Sanatyypit (word types)

    What is a stem (vartalo)?

A stem is always used when you attach endings to the word. In most cases a word's basic form and a stem are the same: koulu ~ koulussa.

Stems that look different from the basic form

Certain words have a stem (vartalo) which looks different from the nominative. (The partitive is, however, different. So you need to memorise these three forms of every word: Nominative, Partitive, Stem).

You can recognise which word type it is by looking at the end of the word in nominative. This is how the types are named, too: e-sanat (words ending in e in nominative: huone~huonee-), nen-sanat (words ending in nen in nominativ:e nainen~naise-), i-sanat (words ending with i: hotelli~hotelli-, kieli~kiele-), si-sanat (words ending with si: uusi~uude-) and so on...

Today we learned 2 word types: -e and -nen, but you actually know more already. It is important that you pick a model word and repeat that word in nominative, partitive and stem so many times that it becomes an automatic poem in your head (you know, like this: huone, huonetta, huonee-, lal-la-lal-lal-laa). Then, it will be easy to make any other similar looking words' form with the same pattern by copying the pattern (i.e. vene, venettä, venee-, lal-la-lal-lal-laa, perhe, perhettä, perhee-, lal-la-lal-lal-laa...). :) So please do some repetitioning practise, saying the words out loud...The word types apply for nouns and adjectives.
